Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 C shortening
  • 3/4 C brown sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 C nuts, finely chopped
  • 3 C flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix together shortening, brown sugar, egg yolks and vanilla. Sift together flour and salt. Stir into shortening mixture. Roll into 1” balls. Dip in egg whites. Roll in chopped nuts. Place about 1” apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Quickly but gently press thumb on top of each cookie. Return to oven for 8 minutes longer. Cool. Place candied fruit or jelly in center.
