Ingredients

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 C sugar
  • 3 tbsp shortening
  • 1 C + 2 tbsp buttermilk
  • 5 1/4 C flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg, heaping
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon, heaping
  • extra sugar and cinnamon, for topping
  • peanut oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Beat together the eggs and sugar thoroughly. Add shortening and milk. Sift in dry ingredients. Chill dough for two hours. Roll out dough on a floured board. Punch with doughnut cutter. Deep-fat fry in 6” of oil. Flip after a minute or so. Cook until golden brown. Combine extra sugar and cinnamon. Dip one side of cooked doughnut into extra sugar and cinnamon mixture.
