Ingredients

  • 1/2 C shortening
  • 2 C sugar, divided
  • 1/2 C powdered cocoa
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 1/3 C cold water
  • 1 1/4 tsp soda, dissolved in 1 tbsp hot water
  • 2 1/2 C cake flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Stir shortening, vanilla and salt together. Add 1/2 cup sugar. Cream until light. Add cocoa. Mix. Add flour, water and soda water. Beat egg whites and add 1⁄2 cup sugar. Fold into batter. Line 8” or 9” round cake pans with wax paper. Bake for 25 minutes.
